What trends can we expect to see within the home of the future?
Architecturally, energy efficiency will be designed into new builds and retrofitted into existing homes through smaller changes. When it comes to health, wellness and sustainability, low toxicity paint and building materials will prevail, as well as organic materials across textiles, bed linens and upholstery. We’ll see a mass uptake in the introduction of biophilic design, which integrates nature and plant life into the home, coupled with a closed loop approach to growing food and composting waste, which then feeds the garden. We’ll also see a shift towards locality, so thinking local when it comes to construction, materials and the footprint of those items we buy to decorate our homes.
When it comes to style and colour palettes, where are we heading?
In a general sense we’ve seen a real return to a very warm palette in Australian interiors. For a long time, we had quite a minimal approach to interiors and neutral interiors. Now we’re definitely seeing a lot more bravery in the use of colour and also a real leaning towards warmer tones in the home; so, browns, terracottas and those types of natural tones that often come through with the use of natural materials. I think the maximalist trend will continue as people see the home as an extension of themselves; it’s not just about keeping a safe interior that’s dictated by the resale of your home.
How does texture take centre stage?
Because we’re seeing a slight resurgence of those almost 70s tonal palettes rather than painting over bricks, we’ll see the colour and the texture of bricks in their raw state. Similarly with natural timbers, rather than painting over timber we’ll continue to see timber in its natural state and a lot of those colours are quite warm. We’re getting comfortable in really feathering our nests, having them feel like a reflection of us, enjoying comfort and layering them so they feel like a sanctuary.

What are your best tips for choosing styles, colours, palettes and textures?
If you want to do something transformative that still feels significant, start with the soft furnishings. It’s so easy to completely change the feel of your bedroom, for example, by simply updating the bed linen and soft furnishings. A rug under foot in any room is one of the most transformative things you can do; add a bold colour on the floor to change the feeling altogether. Artwork is another amazing way to really elevate a room and inject personality and add another layer. Fill your walls in the same way you would fill your shelves.
