Spotlight On: Scandinavia with Janka Polliani

To celebrate the launch of ‘Wonderworld’, we’re spotlighting some of the best creatives around the world. For the first instalment in this series, Oslo-based presenter and stylist Janka Polliani shares an insider guide to her home town.

Janka opts for vibrant fashion and accessories when exploring her home town, Oslo.

Where are your favourite places to shop fashion, art and interiors in Oslo?

Moniker is a huge favourite, but I also love shopping vintage at Velouria Vintage. The Promenaden Fashion District has all the great (and expensive) luxury shops. I love the small independent shops in Grünerløkka, and my favourite interiors shop is Milla Boutique. If you want fresh flowers, H&M home has its own flower market. I’d recommend visiting Munch Museum or Gallery Fineart Oslo for an incredible art experience.”

What do you love about living in Oslo?

“I love the fact that Oslo is a small city. It’s easy to get around and there are a lot of hidden gems. The city has also become a great shopping centre for fashion, art and interiors.”

When you have friends in town, where do you take them for cocktails?

“I love to host so I would usually invite friends over for a wine at my place, but there are some really good cocktail bars around town which are perfect for nights out. I’d recommend Nedre Løkka Bar, Andre Til Høyre (which feels like you’re visiting someone’s home), or Torggata Botaniske.”

Where are the best places to stay and eat in Oslo?

Amerikalinjen and Grand Hotel are two of my favourite places to stay, and they’re both really central which is perfect when you’re here for just a few days. In terms of restaurants, I love Holzweiler Platz, Maaemo, Kumi and Kafeteria August. Bon Lío is a beautiful Nordic/Mediterranean-style restaurant with a great atmosphere.”

What’s your ultimate insider tip for exploring like a local?

“Go to Grünerløkka for a hip and cool vibe and vintage shopping, Frogner and Majorstuen for cute cafes and small shops, and the city centre for luxury stores. For something unique, visit the Oslobukta shopping centre or the Oslo Opera House. Rent a bike to see the city, ski year-round at Snø Indoor Ski Arena and then go for a dip in the ocean. Norwegians can be mistaken for being a little bit cold, but most are just shy at first and will warm up!”
