1. Use SPF every single day

“If you had to pick one product to use,” says Jocelyn, “it should be an SPF.” Her recommendation? Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF30. “It protects against UVA as well as UVB – UVA is ageing, whereas UVB [can be] cancer-causing – and it also protects against blue light.” She admits: “It’s difficult using something that is a preventative when you might not be seeing the results from using it. I understand why [people] would skip it. But it’s the most important thing.”

2. Consider a supplement

“The best place to start hydrating your skin is from the inside out,” says Jocelyn, who recommends Vida Glow Anti-G-Ox. The powder has antioxidant properties from ingredients such as Vitamin C, Zinc and Kakadu plum, which help prevent oxidative stress, and anti-inflammatory ingredients Curcumin and Vitamin E.

3. Always double cleanse

Jocelyn recommends cleansing your face twice for a thorough start to your routine. “That first cleanse is going to wash away the dirt, sweat, oil and makeup,” she says, “then the second cleanse deep cleans the skin and the pores.” She recommends an oil cleanser, such as Shu Uemura Botanicoil Cleansing Oil, for the first step, before using your regular face wash.

4. Use a face washer or cloth

Instead of relying on water and your hands, opt for a gentle face cloth. “Using a face washer will thoroughly remove the cleanser,” says Jocelyn, “and will also have a mild exfoliating effect on the skin.” Consider us converted.

5. Don’t neglect your night routine

“The night routine is the most important part of a skincare routine,” says Jocelyn, explaining how, “when your skin is resting at night, it absorbs a lot more product.” She loves Estée Lauder‘s cult Advanced Night Repair. “This is a lovely hydrating serum, perfect for all skin types.”

6. Use a glycolic acid

If you’re finding your skin gets congested and clogged (or is just lacking a certain glow), it might benefit from daily use of a product with glycolic acid. “Glycolic acid will dissolve away that surface dry dead skin and clean out the pores,” says Jocelyn. She also explains how: “Your skin cells are quite accelerated at the rate they’re metabolising … so sloughing away at the surface will help prevent congestion and breakouts.” She recommends Yves Saint Laurent Pure Shots Serum, and says: “You can use this day or night.”

7. Give your skin a workout, too

Usually when exercising, we’re inclined to use products that feel light-on, but Jocelyn has a counterintuitive piece of advice. “You could go in the other direction and put a mask on,” she says. “The heat [from exercise] … will help it penetrate into your skin.” This one from Clarins will hydrate while you hike.

8. Apply products in order

If you tend to get a little lost midway through a routine, remember that the rule of thumb is light to heavy. “Put the thinnest texture product on first,” explains Jocelyn, “and the more oily, thicker texture products on [last].” When it comes to her own routine, she starts by: “Cleansing first, then I apply eye cream, then serum, because the serum is a light texture that’s going to soak into the deepest layers. Then I follow with moisturiser which sits in the surface layer, and SPF, to protect right on the surface.” For a super nourishing way to top off your routine, try Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator.

9. Go gentle around the eye

When applying eye cream, Jocelyn says, press it into the eye area rather than rubbing or pulling at the skin. “Use your weakest [ring] finger, and press in the direction that lymph flows.” She explains that this is: “From the inside corner of the eyes [outward] to the temple.” (So don’t stop under the eye.) When applying above the eye, “press [product] where there’s bone.” She recommends Sisley Black Rose Eye Contour Fluid, which can do some of the work for you. “It has a beautiful ceramic tip so you can massage the cream into the eye area. It’s really nice and cool to help with lymphatic drainage and puffiness in the eye area.”

10. Try facial massage

Jocelyn promises that by doing a mini lymphatic drainage routine on yourself each day, “skin will be clearer and more glowing.” A basic routine to follow starts at your heart area, working up to under the jaw line using light strokes, then down the neck back to the heart, where the lymphatic system drains. Then, Jocelyn recommends using the same motion working from the center line of the face out to the sides. “It makes a huge difference to puffiness,” she says, “as toxins drain into the lymphatics system.” Once you’ve nailed the technique, you could try incorporating a tool such as this one from Hunter Lab for even greater results.
