Francis Boudin has been crafting traditional Chablis for generations and is amongst a set of staunch traditionalists who have refused to be seduced by modernity. Barrel-free Chablis has been the modus operandi at Chantemerle for decades where the philosophy is to craft their wines as naturally and as authentically as possible. All the fruit is estate owned and sustainable agriculture promoted to ensure they leave a healthy legacy for future generations. This also pronounces fruit purity, a classic Chablis trademark. You can taste the tension in the wine, a nervosity that thrills and excites. The absence of oak lays the wine bare, exposing its stony soil origins. The clarity and crunch of the grapes are on full display. 

This is the best value 1er cru Chablis you will find in the country, hands down. But let's not just dwell on the value as that undersells the quality of this wine. This is a decent step up on the AC coming from vines averaging around 40 years of age. More intensity and focus here, but in the same mould as its little brother. A little punchier too as a rule with a lovely spear of acidity giving the wine a real sense of energy and carrying with it that mineral snap we love. ALEX DOBSON
