This is a phenomenal set of wines that confirms Fèlsina's standing as one of the great estates in the world. It's as simple as that. The 2014 Chianti Classico is a huge overachiever as it has quite a bit of fruit that normally goes into the top selections - Fontalloro, Rancia and Colonia. Now in bottle, the 2013s capture all the potential I sensed when I tasted the wines last year. ANTONIO GALLONI

With a staggering 18+ tre biccherie awards to their name, Fattoria di Felsina is not only one of the greatest producers of Chianti Classico in the zone, but can also lay claim to being one of the greatest estates in Italy.

Located on the southern boundary of the Chianti Classico zone at Beradegna, Felsina is run by the thoughtful, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, and together with consultant oenologist Franco Bernabei, he has guided the estate masterfully through the massive changes that have taken place in Tuscany in the last 30 years, always mindful of only making changes he thought would further the quality of the wines without obliterating the regional nuance.

In style then, these wines are classic in the best sense of the word; the terroir and sangiovese are the stars and not a consultant oenologist peddling a familiar formula. The Felsina wine shows vibrant dark cherry and bitter chocolate backed by aromas of autumn leaves and gentle spice. The interplay between this typical Tuscan savouriness and dark fruits on the palate make this both a great drink but also the perfect food wine. PWS

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable. ANTONIO GALLONI
