Raw beauty, tough femininity and effortless cool. How do you want someone to feel when they wear Aje? The Aje customer is at the heart of our brand, and shapes everything that we do! She is empowered and has a curiosity about the world. What makes Australian fashion so unique and special? Edwina and I both grew up on the Sunshine Coast, so naturally, this has played a pivotal role in influencing our creative process. Uncovering Australia's natural splendour and diversity is part of our design blueprint, something we are extremely proud of. What inspires you? We are endlessly curious about the world, and find we are drawing inspiration from a mutual love of the arts. We also find inspiration in unique design details, from hand-casted hardware, contrast stitching to logo detailing, intricate beading and tactile finishes – all drawn from traditional artisanal techniques. How important is your connection with the wider Australian designer community? A mutual respect and camaraderie has always been embedded in our little and niche industry. During recent times we experienced a communal and collective transition, and have had to navigate new realities together, encouraging support for local business. What was your inspiration for your new collection? We were drawn to a philosophy at the heart of traditional Japanese aesthetics; wabi-sabi which is based on a world view rooted in the acceptance of transience and imperfection. This led us to the notion that beauty is found in impermanence, in ageing or in things falling apart, and throughout the design process, we endeavoured to create pieces that begin as they will end — perfect in their deconstructed and contorted, or detailed forms. Our new collection, Impermanence to us is a celebration of beautiful clothing, to be worn, cherished and maintained for a lifetime of love and joy. In 2018, Arnsdorf was honoured to receive Ethical Clothing Australia certification, which is a testament to the company’s dedication to transparent and ethical manufacturing. Sustainable, ethical, transparent. Tell us about your design philosophy? My design philosophy is that good design should be transformative and have a positive impact on the world. Tell us about manufacturing in Australia and why you do this? By manufacturing here we are able to preserve the manufacturing history of our own country and allow for these skills to be passed down as well as provide jobs. Manufacturing in-house allows us to be so closely involved in the making process and to ensure good working conditions for our employees. Sustainability is, and always has been, an important part of your brand’s DNA. Can you tell us more about your values? Arnsdorf is built on a foundation of transparency, sustainability and ethical manufacturing. Every decision we make in the business is underlined by these guiding principles. We consider the lifecycle of each garment we produce, considering each component like using corozo nut or shell buttons rather than the industry norm which is plastic. We are working towards circularity with our garments so choose components that are biodegradable so they can eventually break down and return to the earth or be recycled. We offer lifetime repairs on our garments to keep them in circulation in our clients’ wardrobes. Our intention is for our Arnsdorf garments to retain their value and for our clients to have a long-term relationship with them rather than just a short fling. The environment is the most precious resource we have, and it is our responsibility to do all we can to preserve it and ensure its survival. What are you hopeful for in the future of Australian fashion? I feel like there has been a huge shift and awaking of consumers to issues around sustainability and ethics, and the realisation that consumers have purchasing power and can make a difference. I’m hopeful that more value will be placed on well-made Australian fashion as we move away from fast fashion. I think Australian design can be a unique offering to the world, and there is an opportunity for us to be leading the way in sustainability. What was your inspiration for Spring Summer 20? Arnsdorf’s new season collection was inspired by a trip to Greece and Italy. The aqua water, clear blue skies and ancient ruins all served as a vision for the new collection. The fluidity and the beauty of the rugged landscape of the Greek Islands combined with the chic sophistication of the women and men in Italy informed the direction. Arnsdorf’s recurring motif of a curved neckline merges this season into a cowl neck in the Siena dress and top, playing on the drapery seen in marble statues. Deborah: Australian. Understated. Honest. Mary Lou: Australian. Considered. Contemporary. How long have you partnered with David Jones? Deborah: We first launched with David Jones in July 2011. Working with a strong wholesale partner such as David Jones has been invaluable in growing bassike from a range of organic jersey staples, to encompass mainline seasonal womenswear, menswear and accessories collections. David Jones has curated a wonderful collection of Australian designer brands over the years, it really is a community we are so proud to be part of. Mary Lou: It has almost been nine years working with David Jones. David Jones is such a strong Australian brand and voice, and being able to align with that since almost the very beginning has been so valuable for bassike. With the support of David Jones, we have been able to share the bassike vision far and wide and found a place in people’s wardrobes throughout Australia – which in turn has helped us support the local industry by staying true to our vision of local, quality and sustainable production. What do you think it is that makes your brand so distinct/unique? Deborah: We’ve always been made ethically and sustainably in Australia, which is something we are incredibly proud of and continues to influence how we design and create our collections. What makes Australian fashion so unique and special? Deborah: Australian fashion is renowned for its relaxed, raw and very natural approach to dressing, which mirrors the way I design and the laid-back Australian lifestyle that we all know and love. I think the way we balance looking chic and put together with a sense of ease is so special and key to the overall understated look behind Australian fashion. Mary Lou: We really are the lucky country. Our way of life resonates with the way we all dress and the way our bassike collections are designed; relaxed with a classic but elevated sensibility. Being Australian made is also an important part of our design process that feels special to us and should feel special to David Jones customers – every day we work alongside a talented local team who ensure all bassike garments are made with care and of the highest quality, to last in your wardrobe for seasons to come. Tell us about manufacturing in Australia and why you do this? Deborah: Manufacturing in Australia has always been important to us. Our intent from the beginning, making our very first organic cotton jersey t.shirt, was to create luxurious wardrobe staples that could be easily cared for and were sustainably produced in Australia. Being able to produce consciously and lighten our impact on the planet, while supporting and working with our local industry has become more meaningful every year, especially in light of the current challenges facing the global community Mary Lou: bassike has been committed to sustainability and local Australian production since we launched in 2006. When we started bassike, people questioned this decision, as producing locally comes at a significantly higher cost to making offshore, but we knew this was what we wanted and that it was the right decision. We know our makers are being paid fair wages and being treated well and we are able to work together, visiting each other on a weekly basis, to co-create our collections exactly as they were imagined. We are constantly inspired by the skill of the makers we partner with and it makes us endlessly proud to preserve and foster talent within our local industry, all the while reducing our environmental impact with the beauty and benefit of a short supply chain. I am considerate of every piece of sampling cloth I use, every design decision make. My long-term goal is an efficiency of design that maximises style, refinement and comfort with minimum footprint. I try to tread lightly on this earth and hope that my ethos is imbued in my designs. Tell us about manufacturing in Australia and why you do this? I would only ever consider manufacturing in Australia. For me, it represents an ongoing legacy. I always want to remain close to my production. I want to be able to touch the garments every step of the way from concept design to finished product. I want to support the local industry that still exists in this country. I enjoy the feeling that vast spaces and limitless skies conjure. Australia allows my mind to be creative and curious.” How important is your connection with the wider Australian designer community? I believe the current crisis and rebuild has offered important opportunities to reach out to one another and connect in a meaningful way. As an industry, we realise we cannot exist on our own. We are inspired by this big, beautiful, diverse land that is unlike any other. We are blessed with crashing coastlines, luscious tropical forests, iconic bushland, colourful reefs, sweeping beaches and of course, the big red heart of our land, the mighty Uluru. Aussie designers have the freedom to experiment and to design for our unique lifestyle. It’s a little more relaxed, it’s a little more fun, it’s a little more effortless. Our industry is defined by boundless creativity, and a somewhat eclectic sensibility, and of course, this amazing connection and community. What inspires you? My creative inspiration is travel – the unexpected and the unknown. What do you think it is that makes your brand so unique? Since the beginning I’ve designed to make women feel good about themselves. Every woman has the right to feel beautiful, no matter her age, shape, size or colour, and when I’m creating a new collection, I want my designs to allow them to feel just that. I’ve never followed trends or tried to conform to how a fashion brand should be. Where’s the authenticity in that? When I’m creating a new collection, I want my designs to allow women to feel empowered, confident, alive. This is truly so important for me. Fashion should be all about celebrating a woman’s unique identity. What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned since starting your brand? It’s been a wild, colourful, terrifying at times, exhilarating rollercoaster ride to say the least. And I tend to learn things the hard way, there’s been many bumps and bruises and hurdles that I’ve either jumped over or face planted into. It’s all part of the story. I think you develop stronger armor as you go along in the fashion business and in life. Walk your path of truth and trust your instincts. “The raw and honest connection between designers is absolutely magnetic. There’s a shared understanding and respect… Carla (Zampatti) is very special to me.” You shared a lovely moment with Carla Zampatti while on set with us, can you tell us about your relationship? The raw and honest connection between designers is absolutely magnetic. There’s a shared understanding and respect. The day of this shoot you could feel the connection of our community, of our spirit and of a common bond. Being there all together was a very sacred moment. Carla (Carla Zampatti, Designer) is very special to me. We connected in a loving and meaningful way of respect, two strong women recognising each other. Recent times of isolation and reflection made all these moments even more powerful. I have so much admiration for Aussie designers for rising up. No competition, no egos, just pure adoration. What are you hopeful for in the future of Australian fashion? There is a big, beautiful opportunity for us all to think about how we can create a better world. I think we are all learning more lessons of accountability and responsibility. It will become more and more important to lead a life that aligns with our values and be more and more grateful for the little things in life. After a decade of experience within the industry, Charlotte made poignant observations that became the foundations Esse was built on. Minimal, Artful, Considered. What makes Australian fashion so special? I think there is special type of curiosity in Australian creatives. Be it the natural world or unique cultures around the globe, that sense of adventure and desire to explore definitely inspires our creativity. For a small population our brands pack a punch internationally. You won the 2020 National Designer Award – congratulations! Can you share with us what this award means to you and how it has impacted your brand? It was an absolute honour to win the National Designer Award, the award means so much. I have been behind the scenes for a while, so to take the leap after so many years was a big jump. For the most part, it’s just humbling to feel that people respect your perspective. It’s really special to feel that there is an audience that want to hear what you have to say creatively. Can you tell us about your sustainability values? To me, sustainability is a mindset. It’s about rethinking, reconsidering, and taking the time to understand every pocket of your business and evaluating: can we be doing this better? That extends right through all facets of your business from fabric you select, to the button on a dress to our internal office practices. I am really passionate about Esse being more of a purpose-led brand. I wanted the word considered to be baked into the brand from the beginning. It really was about saying more with less. I am also really passionate about questioning the supply chain, which is a huge part of building a more considered brand. “With each Esse edition, I am trying to design less in general, but design with quality, value and longevity in mind.” How do you want someone to feel when they wear your brand? Ultimately, I design to make my woman feel like she can be the best version of herself, real and authentic. I want her to have a moment of escapism, a little bit of indulgence but ultimately be comfortable, because that is when she can truly be herself. How important is your connection with the wider Australian designer community? The industry is small, there is definitely a ‘we’re all in the trenches together’ sort of mutual respect. The unity and coming together that has been evident through this time is really warming and comforting. What are you hopeful for in the future of Australian design? We hope for the future this means the evolution of Australian fashion with a greater focus on environmental and social responsibility. Nicky: We both trust each other’s abilities and judgment, and that is what has made it easy working with her (Simone Zimmermann, Co-founder). Simone and I have worked together for over 20 years, and she has always been a constant, stable figure in the business. We feel incredibly lucky to have done what we have done together. What makes Australian fashion so special? Nicky: The environment and the lifestyle are so intertwined, and it ends up having an influence on how we think about dressing. We tend to be a lot more relaxed in our style choices than other parts of the world. I think the one thing that is very Australian about Zimmermann is an optimistic attitude. Where do you find inspiration? Nicky: I mostly pull inspiration from my own memories and where I grew up, drawing on personal stories. It (inspiration) can also come from a more general mood that I am feeling. Australia has always been a big part of who I am as a designer - it influences how I see colour and print; I’ve always been drawn to it. What do you think it is that makes your brand so distinct/unique? Nicky: We are constantly asking ourselves when designing, ‘will this create an emotional connection? Is it the best it can be?’ And push ourselves creatively to put designs out into the world we truly believe in. “Layering textures; colour and playful prints in abundance to create a lush statement that celebrates the enjoyment of dressing up no matter the occasion.” Tell us about your new collection? Nicky: Lucky symbols and icons are incorporated into prints - we played with lady beetles and horse shoes in our embroideries, an evil eye artwork on silk, we touched on some astrology references in our sequins and set it against a backdrop of the chalky and diffused colours of the rainbow. Rich details touch every garment from velvet trims; hand sequined organzas, crystal buttons, elaborate ruffles and words including ‘superstition’ and ‘clairvoyant’ floating across the body as though fading in-and-out of a crystal ball. How important is your connection with the wider Australian designer community? Nicky: Aussies are a resilient bunch, we back each other and love to see each other succeed, especially in tough times. Whether we show support with business advice, humour in the darkness or just some encouragement, it’s a really important part of the local industry. What are you hopeful for in the future of Australian design? Nicky: I hope as an industry we are able to flourish and keep doing what we are doing. Designing and working to create collections in a creative environment is all I’ve ever wanted to do, so I’ll just feel very privileged to be able to do that. If we can keep building a brand along the way that women enjoy, that would be just perfect!
