As the home of Australian fashion, David Jones has partnered with the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation (DAAFF) to create the Pathways Program for First Nations Fashion Designers.
This initiative is focused on shared learnings through cultural awareness education, interactive workshops and a mentorship program to help support and facilitate the development, aspirations and expressions of Indigenous fashion design talent.
Founded in 2008 by best friends Adrian Norris (pictured) and Edwina Forest, Aje is an Australian fashion house dedicated to raw beauty, tough femininity and effortless cool. The duo’s coveted creations illustrate a pure reflection of their learnings and background, with Adrian’s training at the acclaimed Venetian Art School, Liceo Artistico Venezia, and Edwina’s tenure at leading fashion magazine, RUSSH. Grounded in their mutual love of the arts, the like-minded pair devote each seasonal collection to their intrinsic sense of duality; balancing toughness with femininity, untamed volume with structure and signature statement pieces alongside effortless essentials.

Arnsdorf is a Melbourne-based womenswear brand created by designer Jade Sarita Arnott. New to David Jones in Spring Summer 2020, the label’s mission is to create modern archetypal clothing for women of both style and purpose while continually driving transparency across all levels of the fashion industry. In 2018, Arnsdorf was honoured to receive Ethical Clothing Australia certification, which is a testament to the company’s dedication to transparent and ethical manufacturing. Arnsdorf was the first winner of the VAMFF National Designer Award’s Sustainability Award and is the first fashion brand in Australia with B Corp Certification.

Mary Lou: It has almost been nine years working with David Jones. David Jones is such a strong Australian brand and voice, and being able to align with that since almost the very beginning has been so valuable for bassike. With the support of David Jones, we have been able to share the bassike vision far and wide and found a place in people’s wardrobes throughout Australia – which in turn has helped us support the local industry by staying true to our vision of local, quality and sustainable production.
Mary Lou: We really are the lucky country. Our way of life resonates with the way we all dress and the way our bassike collections are designed; relaxed with a classic but elevated sensibility. Being Australian made is also an important part of our design process that feels special to us and should feel special to David Jones customers – every day we work alongside a talented local team who ensure all bassike garments are made with care and of the highest quality, to last in your wardrobe for seasons to come.
Mary Lou: bassike has been committed to sustainability and local Australian production since we launched in 2006. When we started bassike, people questioned this decision, as producing locally comes at a significantly higher cost to making offshore, but we knew this was what we wanted and that it was the right decision. We know our makers are being paid fair wages and being treated well and we are able to work together, visiting each other on a weekly basis, to co-create our collections exactly as they were imagined. We are constantly inspired by the skill of the makers we partner with and it makes us endlessly proud to preserve and foster talent within our local industry, all the while reducing our environmental impact with the beauty and benefit of a short supply chain.

After graduating with honours from a Bachelor of Design at UTS in 2008, Charlotte Hicks went on to design for leading Australia labels. Charlotte knew she wanted to create a brand that was unique, that didn’t follow the traditional model - a brand that was ‘built for longevity’. After a decade of experience within the industry, Charlotte made poignant observations that became the foundations Esse was built on. More specifically the abundance of excess, the wastefulness, the speed and overall loss of value a customer places on their purchases. Esse became a fusion of old and new. Melbourne-based luxury fashion brand founded by Elinor Joslin McInnes. After a decade long tenure working in the Australian fashion industry and a lifetime of influence from her artist-parents, Elinor founded her label Joslin In early 2018. Joslin’s debut Resort 18 Collection launched in October 2018, with her signature linen dresses catapulting the brand into the Australian market.
