Another rising talent amongst the new generation of young producers who have made the Loire their home. After graduating from Beaune Xavier worked at the leading Gigondas producer, Chateau St Cosme before buying his first vineyards in 2005. These were well established vineyards planted pre 1940. Choosing Montlouis, the appellation just south of Vouvray, he has built up his vineyard holdings to 13 hectares in total with 9 hectares being in Montlouis and 4 hectares in Touraine. Xavier farms organically without the use of chemicals or artificial fertilisers. Harvesting is done by hand and with the natural low yields from old vines the wines have great depth and purity. The Touche Mitaine parcel features Chenin Blanc vines aged 35 years, planted on clay and flint soils. It was vinified in used oak barrels of 228 litres, with an élevage lasting twelve months. Aromatically this is rich in powdered chalk, with layers of white peach and a fragrant, lifted, minty freshness. The palate matches this style, in a gently composed structure, polished and fresh, with the same minty, white peach substance. It is framed by firm acidity, which I find typifies the vintage.
