There are times when it's clear you've come across a special producer. Where the combination of passion for the craft melds with real talent and an innate understanding of how to translate the variety and site into the bottle with transparency and complexity. This doesn't happen that often which makes the occurrene more noteworthy when it does. Meeting and tasting John Hughes' wines some years ago was one such happening and we have been enthusiastic advocates for this superb set of rieslings ever since. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

From the family White Hutt vineyard. Immediate white florals unfurl from the glass. Jasmine and flannel flower. Green Alphonso mango skin, orange blossom and pink lady apple. It¿s tightly coiled with a touch of spritz that relaxes and opens to white stone fruit and lemon peel. Acidity, although upright as expected, is surprisingly unified in the wine. The fleshiness of white peach is gathering momentum. This feels like its been getting to know itself in the bottle for longer than it has. 97 SHANTEH WALE, Wine Pilot
