Bras: find your perfect fit

We’re just going to put this out there. There’s very little consistency when it comes to women’s dress sizes. In one brand the 10 fits like glove, then in another you’re wriggling around the fitting room, dress only half zipped up. We’ve all been there.

Finding the right size and style of bra can be even more challenging.

How to find a bra that fits perfectly

When you take the measurements (cup size, under-bust width) and the multitude of styles – underwire, no underwire, balconette, minimiser, push-up etc. – The potential for error increases exponentially. With this in mind, it’s not surprising to that many of us are wearing the wrong size bra.

At some point we determine our size, but what many of us overlook is that over time our hormones, weight and physical routines change, and our breasts change too.

Susan, an in-store bra fitter at David Jones Elizabeth St, has been fitting bras for almost 20 years. She says that you should have your bra fitted every two or three years, or after any shift in weight or routine.

Some of the most common fitting mistakes she sees are:

· The band is too loose to hold everything in place.
· Cups are too small.
· Not enough support.
· Wrong style of bra for the woman’s shape.

How to find a bra that fits perfectly

The perfect fitting bra can give “totally different definition to a woman’s body, giving her more confidence and making her feel great,” says Susan.

Leona, fitter at David Jones in Kotara has also been working in intimate apparel for twenty years. She adds that “if the bra is fitted correctly, you should not feel that you actually have a bra on.”

David Jones offers a free bra-fitting service with no obligation to buy. A regular fitting takes about half an hour and your expert fitter will give you options across a range of brands, so, don’t be surprised to find your perfect fit in a few different sizes.

Specialised styles of bras require a different approach to fitting, so it pays to be re-fitted if you are buying a bra for a specific purpose, for example:

  • Strapless, halter neck and plunge bustiers for evening wear and summer clothes.
  • Sports bras to minimise bounce during running or cross training.
  • Maternity bras for pregnant and nursing mothers.
  • Minimiser bras to create slender silhouette in floaty tops or shift dresses. (Some women can even drop a dress size with a well fitted minimiser bra.)

Walk-ins are welcome, or you can book your fitting online
