After months of anticipation – and speculation – it was finally revealed that Meghan Markle wore a Givenchy Haute Couture dress designed by the French fashion house’s first female artistic director Clare Waight Keller. The dress itself was elegant in its design, in an unadorned double-silk make with a bateau neckline and three-quarter sleeves.

The choice of the designer, meanwhile, said a lot, reflecting the bride’s standing as the world’s most modern princess.

With a sheer veil affixed with a bandeau tiara made with Queen Mary’s diamonds and a central brooch dating to 1893, Meghan arrived at the alter at St George’s Chapel in stunning simplicity.

Queen Elizabeth wore a long-sleeve dress by British designer Norman Hartnell made from soft Damascus Prokar. Many have claimed the dress inspired Grace Kelly’s in her wedding to Prince Rainier in 1956 and also Kate Middleton’s in her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

In 1981 Princess Diana wore an ivory silk taffeta and antique lace gown with a 7.62m train designed by Elizabeth Emanuel to marry Prince Charles. The dress is now an iconic remnant of its time (the early ’80s) with its giant, voluminous sleeves and oversized everything.

Kate – aka Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge – wore a fitted lace-detailed dress by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen fashion house to her wedding in 2011. Like Meghan’s dress, Kate’s combined modernity with tradition in a nod to the bride’s role in the royal family and public life more generally.
