Actress and soon to be mum of three Teresa Palmer talks travelling with kids ahead of Mother’s Day.

Actress and soon to be mum of three Teresa Palmer splits her time between the United States and Australia, shepherding her family between their homes in LA and the Adelaide Hills. All that travel means she’s well versed in best practice for avoiding jet lag and toddler temper tantrums in transit. “We are really flexible, and the kids have become super-resilient to travelling – they find it all a big adventure,” she says. “My husband and I understand that even if we have a cranky 2-year-old, as long as we’re all being loving and helpful to each other, we can make it a positive experience.”

Palmer’s go with the flow approach to parenting is ultimately all about balance. “I set loving boundaries but I’m always down for adventure and like to follow my children’s’ interests and nurture whatever they’re excited or passionate about,” she says. The family gravitate towards natural parenting (also called attachment parenting), a methodology that prescribes limited media time and encourages the use of imagination via regular play. “I think my husband and I strike a balance between being fun, connected parents, and ensuring our kids are aware of boundaries,” she says.

I strive to be a good listener, set appropriate and helpful boundaries for my children, smother them with affection and always be the safest space for them to return to.

With such a strong focus on family, fitting in both personal and couple time can become a challenge. “I have certainly taken a backseat in terms of meeting my own needs since becoming a mama, as there are so many other people I’m taking care of,” she says. Despite the juggle, Palmer and her husband make it work by rearranging their schedules when they start to feel time poor. “Mark and I spend time together when the kids are at school and ELC, whether that’s grabbing a smoothie, taking an exercise class or even just going for a drive, we always try to carve out he and I time,” she says.
