Before winter’s chill rolls in, get acquainted with the must-have pieces and exclusive new streetwear labels in the David Jones menswear department.

1. MSG

It takes a confident man to pull off a denim jacket so head-turning it literally shouts “Wow” at passers-by. Updating the classic elbow patch with an eye-catching embroidered star, this wardrobe staple is for those who like their weekend kit to stay on trend. But what else would you expect from MSGM? The Italian label has a reputation for being tongue-in-cheek.

2. Rag & Bone

2. Rag & Bone bomber jacket $749, T-shirt $169.95, and jeans $349. 3. McQ hoodie $399, and track pants $459. AXEL ARIGATO sneakers $299. 4. Kent & Curwen sweater $750, and pants $299 (both available from late March). AXEL ARIGATO sneakers $299.

Since 2002, Rag & Bone – under the direction of British expat Marcus Wainwright – has taken inspiration from both sides of the North Atlantic. Fusing downtown New York cool with classic London polish, it’s the go-to for smart separates – think polo shirts, tailored chinos and jackets you can dress up or down, like this nylon bomber.

3. McQ

This (slicker-than-your-average) offshoot of the Alexander McQueen label stands out from the fashion pack by deftly blending the mainline collection’s signature maximalism with a fresh but functional flair. Sharp tailoring is the key component in everything, but McQ’s sport-inspired leisurewear is what you’ll invest in first. Isn’t it time you elevated the humble trackie?

4. Kent & Curwen

Together with business partner David Beckham, creative director Daniel Kearns brings this heritage British label, which invented the cricket sweater back in 1926, into the modern wardrobe with relaxed yet polished separates. You’ll be pleased to know Becks has a hand in every aspect of the gig, from advertising to design.

5. Y-3

5. Theory sweatshirt $299, and pants $399. Y-3 sneakers $450. Saturdays NYC bag $360. 6. AMI jacket $410, and T-shirt $180.

A fashion-meets-form partnership between Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas, Y-3 puts a street-style spin on the legendary tailor’s avant-garde craftsmanship. The jewel in the brand’s crown is its line-up of sneakers, which adhere to a tried-and-true formula: monochrome, minimal and exceptionally hip.

6. AMI

As the first-ever menswear designer to take out France’s prestigious ANDAM Fashion Award, Ami’s Alexandre Mattiussi is one of the industry’s brightest stars. These days, his collections are designed with friends in mind – ami, after all, is French for “friend” – and, like this T-shirt, they strike the perfect balance between Parisian prep and the latest urban inspiration. Oui, oui!
