The Best Spring Racing Accessories for Men

Mens style at at Spring Racing Carnival

From head to toe, it’s the details that make the difference. These are the ones that count at the carnival...

Ties, squares, pins

When it comes to the building blocks of your look – shirt, tie, pocket square – at least one of them should be a solid colour; the others can bring flair with pattern. If you’re wearing prints, it’s all about mixing not matching and choosing different proportions. Try a large-scale print on your tie teamed with a more intricate one on your pocket square.

The same rule applies to colour: complimentary shades will always rule over a perfect match, so use your pocket square as an opportunity to break up the solid colour of your jacket. Don’t overthink the fold – a simple square shape peeking from your pocket is perfectly acceptable.

When attending the spring carnival, the final flourish is an eye-catching lapel pin. Go for the official flower of the day (find them all here) or add a dash of wit and humour with a novelty number.

The most obvious accessory to get right is the floral boutonniere and the art with which you work your outfit around it.

A navy or green suit looks more expensive with tan or toasted-brown leather lace-ups; black is never going to go wrong with black. If your shoes have details, make sure they are as neat as new. Scuffs don’t say VIP marquee.

A well-made shoe is important. Look for a leather style finished with unique design details such as tassels, contrast stitching and leather laces.
