How to Wear 1 Suit in 3 Very Different Ways

A great suit is often considered a foolproof fashion choice, the ensemble you reach for when you don’t want to think too hard about what you’re wearing. And in many ways, that’s exactly what it should be! The counterpoint to this, however, is that if you only ever wear the exact same suit in the exact same way, you could be missing valuable opportunities to show your flair.

With a few subtle tweaks, one suit can run the full gamut, from extremely polished and formal, to more laidback and even edgy. To demonstrate this argument, David Jones menswear buyer Matt Wagner-Smith outlines three very different ways to wear a pale grey suit from Australian tailoring brand Uberstone. The three looks couldn’t be more different, but all of them satisfy Derby Day’s strictly monochrome dress code.

Formal: go head-to-toe

“For a more formal look, style the complete suit with a plain white shirt, or a white shirt with a grey or black print. Complete the look with a black, charcoal or grey tie – you could even wear a bowtie if you can pull that look off – and a pocket square. Socks are optional with your black shoes, but I’d go with a pair of cool Happy Socks to match the look. Grey is quite a versatile colour for a suit, and this one could also be worn on Oaks Day by adding a pink shirt and accessories.”

Modern: add chinos

“While the spring racing carnival isn’t a time to go too casual, you can try a more modern and youthful feel by trading the suit trousers for a smart pair of black chinos. This is my favourite look as chinos and blazers are extremely versatile and can be used for multiple occasions. This lends itself to more casual footwear and you can roll up the hem (once or twice) to either show off your cool socks, or potentially the ankles. Finish with a woven leather belt, which goes well with chinos.”

Edgy: accessories make the look

“This is a younger, cooler and slightly more hipster look. It could also be worn to Derby Day and if the whole look comes together well with the right accessories – think hat, belt, tie, braces, awesome jacket and maybe an umbrella – you could pull off a showstopper!”
