How to Excel at Race-Day Style

Mens style at at Spring Racing Carnival

The spring racing carnival is unabashedly a time to dress up and even add a certain flamboyance to your look – which can seem daunting if it’s outside your regular wardrobe comfort zone. How do real guys approach the challenge of adding flair, while also staying true to themselves? To find out, we asked three well-known athletes – former AFL players Adam Goodes and Joel Patfull, and surf lifesaver Jett Kenny – for their very best advice for looking sharp at the races.

My best style tip…

Joel: “Less is more and stick to the classics. Also, tailoring is key – I love to get my suits tailored to fit me perfectly, especially the trousers, as I like a skinny leg.”

Adam: “I focus on finding a well-tailored suit and accessorising with a great tie, pocket square, belt and shoes. For men, you want to keep your outfit polished and sophisticated.”

Jett: “I’m noticing traditional smart tailoring is a big trend, especially a full three-piece suit with a vest. It is also very on trend to wear a printed or paisley shirt with a clashing tie and pocket square. Don’t be afraid to wear bold patterns or colours this race season.”

The right accessories...

Jett: “Now that I’ve been working with David Jones, I’ve learnt to focus on accessorising.”

A pocket square, lapel pin, skinny tie and cufflinks are key accessories for men that will make for a polished look.

Joel: “ I love wearing boots instead of dress shoes this season. It’s unexpected and something I’m really into.”

A great day at the races involves...

Joel: “Elle [Ferguson, Joel’s fiancée], a winner and a great suit.”

Adam: “A few winning tips, cold pale ale and some good tunes.”
