How To Find The Perfect Jeans You’ll Always Love

Invest In The Classics

There’s nothing more versatile than a pair of jeans in a timeless fit and wash. “If you find a classic pair of jeans, they will go with everything;” says Bassike co-founder Deborah Sams. “You can wear jeans with tailoring or just a simple jersey T-shirt. A crisp white shirt is always beautiful with denim, too.”

Find Your Perfect Fit

To start building the ultimate denim wardrobe, Sams says to tune out trends initially and instead focus on finding your perfect pair. “You’ve got to follow your instincts on ‘Do I feel like wearing tight jeans?’, ‘Do I feel like wearing slouchy jeans?’, then it’s trial and error to find the right fit and shape for your body.” But the one thing you should never disregard? Comfort. “Because if they’re not comfortable, you won’t wear them,” says Sams.

Diversify Your Denim

Once you’ve found a fit you love, Lela Becker, co-founder of LA-based denim brand Mother, says it’s time to expand your denim rotation “Consider investing in a couple of pairs you can reach for on any occasion – a medium-blue wash and a dark-blue wash are both versatile options you can build your wardrobe around,” says Becker.

You could even try contrasting blue washes for a modern take on double denim. “Or one of my favourite ways to style statement denim is to go for a monochromatic look, like all white,” adds Becker, who suggests pairing wide-leg jeans with a matching denim shirt. “It feels fresh without being over the top.”

Try A Trend

“Autumn/Winter 24 is a really fun time for denim – we’re seeing so many varied silhouettes both on the catwalks and with street-style looks,” says Neuw Denim women’s designer Emilie Sinclair. “The iconic high-rise waist is not going anywhere, low and mid-rise styles are big news. “Or try upsizing relaxed high-rise fits so they sit low-slung – it feels fresh and creates a wearable anti-fit alternative to the oversized trend,” she says.

Sams agrees: “Bigger, slouchier shapes with wider legs, longer lengths and raw hems are trending over slim-fit shapes. There’s a move from traditional five-pocket shapes to more ‘fashion’ shapes, whether they be high-waisted with a super slouch and a super-wide leg or cargo and utility workwear shapes.” Mother co-founder Tim Kaeding says the brand is also subscribing to a bigger-is-better approach. “We’re gravitating towards more voluminous cuts, such as ’70s-inspired flares, super-wide leg jeans and barrel cuts.”

Break The (Gender) Rules

His-and-hers denim is becoming a thing of the past. “There’s a lot of androgyny in denim at the moment and there’s definitely a trend towards girls wearing guys’ jeans and guys wearing girls’ jeans,” explains Sams. “It’s really starting to mix up the shapes and I think it’s such a cool way of wearing denim.” She adds that the upcoming Bassike collection features universal denim for men and women.

Style Strategically

Whether you’re new to oversized denim or just a minimalist at heart, try Sams’ styling philosophy: “If you’re wearing a super-slouchy bottom, make sure you don’t have an oversized top with it. Try to create a silhouette with a high-low kind of look.” This will keep your styling modern and refined, and won’t overwhelm your frame.

Revive The ‘Going Out Top’

‘Jeans and a nice top’ is back on our radar -and it’s the perfect way to dress up denim. “I turn to elevated, semi-sheer knitwear to layer under my blazer to bring a little bit more fun to jeans,” says Sinclair. “Pointed, heeled boots are another great staple for styling with denim, especially when working with longer silhouettes with more volume.”

Buy Better

Like with all things in your wardrobe, it’s crucial to take a conscious approach with denim. “There has to be thought around the providence of the product, where it was made and what sort of denim was used,” says Sams, whose denim pieces are made in Australia with organic Japanese cotton.

Sinclair agrees: “Sustainable and ethical denim is critical to the future of fashion. It’s an ongoing process, but by working with responsible fibres at ethical factories and improving water stewardship and water recycling, denim production can take the right steps in becoming more sustainable.”

Wear Forever

Mother’s dedication to reducing the environmental impacts of denim encompasses minimising waste through product longevity. “Quality jeans are meant to be worn again and again,” says Kaeding. “Some of the coolest jeans are worn-in or upcycled denim, so investing in a well-made pair of jeans you love and will wear regularly is an important way we can all be more sustainable.”

This is also why quality denim is at the core of Bassike. “You should think about the longevity of the garment and how much wear you will get out of it,” says Sams. “If you invest in denim, it’s not going to wear out. The beauty of buying quality denim is that it will actually get better the more you wear it.”
